🇩🇪 Salona, in direkter Umgebung des heutigen Split, war die Hauptstadt der römischen Provinz Dalmatia.
Dieses mächtige politische Zentrum wurde im 4. Jahrhundert v. Chr. gegründet und bot rund 60.000 Menschen Platz. Der Legende nach ist Salona der Geburtsort des Kaisers Diokletian. Im 6. Jahrhundert wurde die Stadt von Awaren und Slaven zerstört, und anschließend verlassen.
Heute noch sind die Überreste der beeindruckenden Mauern mit ihren Türmen und Toren, das Forum mit Tempeln, das Amphitheater und Friedhöfe mit Märtyrern zu besichtigen.
Der größte archäologische Park Kroatiens bietet eine sehr entspannte Alternative zu der in den Sommermonaten völlig überlaufenen Altstadt von Split.

This powerful political center was founded in the 4th century BC and could accommodate about 60,000 people. According to legend, Salona is the birthplace of Emperor Diocletian. In the 6th century the city was destroyed by Avars and Slavs, and subsequently abandoned.
Today you can still see the remains of the impressive walls with their towers and gates, the forum with temples, the amphitheater and cemeteries with martyrs.
The largest archaeological park in Croatia offers a very relaxing alternative to the old town of Split, which is completely overcrowded in the summer months.
